Do you even practice?

People tell me that they want to be good at silat regularly. They tell me that they are serious. The real deal. They are as good as their word and they will train hard. Some want to master pencak silat or the “martial arts.”

For your information, I never believe those statements. It has been my experience that there are few people who actually can be taken at their word to finish what they start. There are even fewer who actually start.

Everyone WANTS to be the best. Few are willing to really adjust their life to make that a possibility, let alone a reality.

What does it really take? It takes a mental decision to train and practice regularly. Daily.

Look, pencak silat Pertempuran is a subset of the skills you can find in pencak silat as a whole. In my opinion, they are the necessary combative core. If it takes you 5 years just to get through the foundation of what I teach, then you may need to look at your training regimen or your life and figure out what’s holding you back.

Here are some enemies to progress:
1. No clear training/practice progression. You do whatever you want everyday as opposed to being specific and training with intention those things you still need to improve.
2. Your distracted by new things. Same issue.
3. You Don’t train daily. I tell people all the time. 15 minutes a day is a good plan. The reason is because it’s long enough to build a habit and short enough that there’s no excuse. Most of the time you’ll do more but truly 15 minutes is easy to find.
4. You’re sitting down when you think about training. Instead, immediately stand up and do small things to keep it fresh.
5. Thinking of it as work. There’s no deadline to this. You are your own worst enemy. Have fun as much as possible. Keep training. Look for they joy in learning.

You gotta put in the time. This was my workout from today. It was primarily focused on movement of my feet and legs. I incorporated hands but only in intentional ways to emphasize footwork and mobility.

WOD=Workout Of the Day

  • Weak side lead stepping in each direction.
  • Strong side lead stepping in each direction.
  • Langkah Lima explosive footwork.
  • Langkah Satu
  • Explosive Entries
  • Ales 11 with sidestep and covering shield

  • Duck with counter strike moving backward
  • Step and strike combinations

  • Explosive entry one and counter strike one
  • Explosive entry one and counter strike three or four
  • Sempok to horse with cover

  • Arm rotations
  • Knee Shielding off of combination striking

Much of this might be new to you. That’s totally cool. The point wasn’t to prescribe as much as to show what you can get done in a short amount of time. Total workout time about 1.5 hours…And the only reason I stopped is because it was getting late. Time flies when you’re having fun. Go have fun!! There is a lot to enjoy about moving and being intentional about it.

Sincerely
Guru Stark

Founder of Pencak Silat Pertempuran. In looking for a martial art that was practical and artistic I found Pencak Silat. In silat I found an art that's organic nature allowed me to change it to make it culturally realistic and still allowed me to have the benefit of art and body culture.
